Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy killed it yet again with his Pre Fall 2012 collection. Riccardo's expertise of cut is so evident in the jackets and the coats. The knee high boot is also something new for Givenchy known for killer pumps and ankle boots. I also love how he shoots all of his lookbooks on the streets of urban centers, this time Williamsburg New York, to give his clothing a sense of reality amongst alot of fantasy.

The fall advertising campaigns are upon us and my two favorite ones so far are Balmain's new lower priced line and the Stella McCartney ad.The Balmain ad reminds me of old Avedon portraits and I love the contrast of color with black and white in the Stella ad shot by Mert and Marcus. I'm a huge fan of simplicity and minimalism and both of these ads are chic and modern.

It's been almost a year since I posted on my blog. I know I know. To be honest I was having a media overload. Facebook, Twitter, Blog, Emails, and reading other peoples blog just took so much time. Well I'm inspired to post again. This spread in Vogue Italia completely got my juices going. Im all about color now for some reason and this editorial explodes with so much color and fantasy. In 2009 friends of mine Mauricio and Roger Padilha published the Stephen Sprouse book. Stephen was one of my favorite designers in the world next to Jean Paul Gaultier when I was a kid. While Jean Paul was pure Parisian culture mixed with what the kids on the streets of London were wearing in the 80's, Stephen was pure New York. We may have the super chic Lea T. of Givenchy fame as our modern day 'It Girl', but before her was Teri Toye. I was obsessed with Teri. The super straight hair and bangs and decked out in all black or day-glo. She alongside Sprouse and Steven Miesel still continue to inspire me to this day. Summer is almost over and it's time to prepare for fall and I'll be doing lots of posts on things that I find inspiring. Lately, being a blogger has become so popular that I will try to make my blog more intimate. Isn't that the reason one should blog at this point? First off, I did a post a bit back on one of my favorite models Lynn Koster. Well another model from that era was just as inspiring to me. Her name is Leslie Winer.Leslie Winer is a bit of a mystery. After working as a well-known model in New York, where she got a reputation for being "difficult to work with" (therefore heightening her appeal to fashionistas), she met William Burroughs and Jean-Michel Basquiat, dropped out of the scene, and produced "Witch", prescient album (called the grandmother of trip hop by NME). Then she seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth, only to occasionally resurface doing vocals for second-hand artists like Bomb The Bass and Mekon.

The 70's Are Back

This past season there was a big emphasis on the 50's and the 60's. You can see it the collections of Dries Van Noten, Louis Vuitton, and Prada with Dior New Look silhouettes. Well the pendulum is about to swing to the 70's. I've always have been a fan of the 70's because of it's clean, sexy, sportswear vibe. French Vogue is an early adopter of this look with the styling of Carine Roitfeld and Emmanuelle Alt. Here is an editorial from the upcoming June/July 2010 issue featuring Freja who embodies that look and feel of that era perfectly.

I met Lea a couple of years ago when I went to Paris to dj for Riccardo Tisci after one of his shows. From the moment that i met her she was sweet and sincere! She is from Brazil and like every Brazilian that I've met they quickly becomes family. Like Erin Wasson and Daria Werbowy she inspires me with her impeccable taste and carefree attitutude towards life! It's been a minute since I've posted on my blog, but she is back with a vengeance! Lately I've been thinking a lot about what "cool" actually means to me. Is it some underground trend that only a few know about? Is it getting past velvet ropes of the hottest clubs? Having music that hasn't exploded yet? Getting those shoes straight off the runway before everyone else? I think cool actually means having great personal style, a point of view, a certain nonchalance, and a disregard for convention. Two girls that I think represent that at the moment for me are Erin Wasson and Daria Werbowy. The common thread for these women to me is that they are at the apex of fashion and have access to the latest and the greatest, but both are natural beauties with distinct personal style and are true individuals. That to me is the essence of cool!

There has been a lot of discussion about the lack of diversity in fashion, especially advertising. The runway tends to be more forgiving and this season was exceptional in it's use of women of all colors from African American to Asian and Latina. My favorite model of the season was a girl born in Puerto Rico named Joan Smalls. Another new label coming out of Italy is called Tint. Lots of layering in in monochromatic colors of white, pink, navy, and a color I would describe as tobacco. Slouchy and elegant!

House music is coming back in to vogue again. Its influence never went away as far as I am concerned, but you are starting to see and hear it more from the music being produced in Europe to pop culture artists like David Guetta and The Black Eye Peas. In honour of this I thought I would post a video from a collection in 1990 from Thierry Mugler with soundtrack from one of my friends and mentors Danny Tenaglia. The song is called Bottom Heavy released in 1994 on Tribal Records.

I'm very excited to be going to my very first fashion week in Milan. I've been to Rome and Florence, but never to the industrial city of Milan. I plan on checking out the legendary 10 Corso Como, but I'm more excited to see one of my closest friends Ed Buchanan. Ed moved back to Milan from NYC in June 2009 to design the Italian brand Sansovino 6. Ed is a very chic man. He has been the design director of Bottega Veneta as well as Sean John Menswear. He is never without his Rick Owens or Margiela, his 'chiceries' as he calls them and is always very stylish. Sansovino 6 is such reflection of Ed's taste; quality fabrics, relaxed yet chic shapes, muted colors, easy, modern, refined, dare I say sexy, and for the person who is well travelled with discerning tastes that demands style above fashion.

I loved the Fall Calvin Klein 2010 collection not only for it's a clean lines and urban sophistication, but also for it's mixture of mature women like Stella Tennant , Kirsty Hume , Kristen McMenamy , and Tanga Moreau, all big models from the 90's, alongside new girls like Jac and Karlie Kloss. It was truly reflective of it's customer as well as the reality and perhaps fantasy of alot of women.

Thierry Mugler

One of the greatest designers and showman, Thierry Mugler ruled the late 70's and eighties. Besides Rei Kawakubo of Comme Des Garcons and Yohji Yamamoto, I would say the most influential designers of the 80's were Mugler, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Azzedine Alia, who I will be doing a major post on soon. Mugler combined 1940's and 50's Hollywood with sci-fi, 60's , superhereos and heroines, and extremely strong woman with expert tailoring. He was so ahead of his time and his fragrance Angel continues to be one of the best selling perfumes of all time. When I was a child I had an uncle who was a neighborhood tailor, I would tag along with my father and watch him get a pair of pants hemmed or a jacket fitted. This is when I discovered men's fashion and GQ magazine and the world of Bruce Weber. He collected them as far back as 1977. When he moved to another state to work as an mechanic for American Airlines I inherited the GQ collection becuase he knew how much I loved to look at them when I went to visit him with my father. I was enraptured by the men Bruce Weber photographed. They were so beautiful and athletic and well dressed in a casual, sexy way. Very louche! This is one of favorite editorials featuring a water polo player from Pepperdine College named Jeff Aquilon with a very beautiful model named Andie McDowell.

For 15 years, beginning in 1972, Bernstein's signature artwork graced the monthly covers of Interview Magazine, that seminal celebrity chronicle of the social, fashion, and art crowd that had met Andy Warhol's Factory and the backroom of Max's Kansas City in the 60's and catalyzed in the sybaritic heat of Studio 54 in the late 70's. The makeup artist Way Bandy was the first beauty superstar. He was there for the ’70s and the ’80s when fashion met disco and sex. He was there when the production values at photo shoots—then called sittings—went through the roof. It was he and his adopted creative family who designed an American look and lifestyle that inspires fashion insiders and image savants to this day.
He was also a great artist and these are some of his drawings that he did for Details Magazine in the 80's edited by Annie Flanders.

Artist and Composer Mark Kostabi was born in Los Angeles in 1960 to Estonian immigrants. He was raised in Whittier, California and studied drawing and painting at California State University, Fullerton. In 1982 he moved to New York and by 1984 he became a leading figure of the East Village art scene. During that time he also developed a provocative media persona by publishing self-interviews which commented on the commodification of contemporary art. By 1987 his works were widely exhibited in New York galleries and prominently throughout the United States, in Japan, Germany and Australia. In 1988, inspiring extensive international press coverage, he founded Kostabi World - his large New York studio known for openly employing numerous painting assistants and idea people. In 1996 be began dividing his time between New York and Rome and consequently his work's already strong presence in the Italian art scene was vigorously enhanced.
